Healthcare is sick: We need to level up to fix it

Healthcare as an industry is sick and one of the key pathogens killing it is technology. Technology that distracts clinicians from their duties. That causes errors to occur. That unnecessarily kills, maims and offends - yet rarely gets the blame. It’s an industry almost completely devoid of human-centred design.

In one hospital we recently worked in, an audit showed that 80% of prescriptions patients left with were wrong. The problems that lead to such disastrous outcomes are complex, but solvable. As designers, we not only have a duty to try and address them, but to better arm ourselves when we find ourselves in the position of designing healthcare systems.

In this presentation I'll describe the problematic landscape and suggest some ways in which you, as designers might tackle this wicked problem.
