Mobile user experience: Methods and tools

Oliver Weidlich and Rod Farmer

Mobile devices have changed how people communicate and access internet based services, but many mobile services still don’t harness the full benefits of the mobile user experience. The mobile and personal nature of these devices creates problems for observing/tracking interactions within the lab and especially out in the field. This presentation is aimed at how to get your mobile services into customers’ hands early in the design process and the different ways of exploring mobile user experiences to better inform your design.

Oliver & Rod from Mobile Experience have worked on hundreds of mobile services. Drawing upon their experiences and previous case studies, this presentation will cover:

  • How to monitor and learn from customer’s mobile experiences in both laboratory and field settings; from mobile device cameras in the lab, to tracking interactions and experiences when using mobile services on device out in the field
  • Different approaches and tools for prototyping mobile products and services
  • Basic measures, and available tools, to evaluate mobile usage
  • Emerging techniques to capture and describe mobile interaction across channels and touch points
